ToggleWhat is a Flash Drive?
In a previous article, we discussed some differences between flash drives and external hard drives. Now, in this article, we are going to discuss why and how flash drives can be more practical than lugging around an external hard drive. But first, what is a flash drive? A flash drive, also known as a “jump drive” or “thumb drive, is a small device on which data is stored. It’s generally no bigger than your thumb (hence the name “thumb drive”), and works by being plugged in to a USB port. Now, flash drives are much smaller than externals in both size and the amount of data stored, but are sometimes more practical to use.
What can be stored on a Flash Drive?
This question is very easy to answer. Anything. That’s right, you can save any kind of data on this sort of device. Pictures, text files, videos, homework. You name it. If it can be saved, it can be placed on a flash drive. Now, as previously mentioned, you have much less available space on a flash drive, but this doesn’t necessarily mean you need an external hard drive. That’s part of what makes them so useful. The majority of people who use flash drives are students, from grade school to college, and they get a wide usage, from presentations to next week’s homework.
Flash Drive vs. External Hard Drive
Alright, by this point, we’ve discussed what a flash drive is, and what you can use it for. Now it’s time to discuss why a flash drive is more practical than an external hard drive. One major difference between the two is size. Yes, externals are larger, and they hold a plethora of information compared to their smaller counterparts, but sometimes size is the issue. If you are a student, then you know saving space is part of keeping well organized. Sometimes a student’s limited on how much they can carry. This is why flash drives are perfect for student use. They are compact, and easy to carry. You can carry it in your pocket, in your briefcase/backpack, or you can hook it to a keychain, or even a lanyard for quick access.
Another reason why a flash drive would be more practical, especially for a student, is because a student is not going to have to worry about saving 100GB worth of data in one class, or even in one school day. Flash drives are ideal because you can whatever it is you are saving home with you, and quickly and easily load it on to your computer/laptop, or even a tablet. From there, you can save that information on to an external if you need the extra space. But for running back and forth between classes, why bother carrying around something that may take up precious space in your backpack, briefcase, or even locker, when you can simply carry your homework or presentation in your pocket, or even around your neck?
So, if you are in the market for finding backup solutions for your data, or a student looking to save some space, remember to consider a flash drive. But, if for some reason you find yourself stumped, just remember that there are always courteous professionals waiting to hear from you, and they are only a click or call away. Just don’t stress, because when it comes to finding the right backup solution for your needs, there’s always an answer.
