In today’s market, more and more customers are turning to online services, like shopping for pretty much anything, to banking, and paying bills. But this also makes having a business more competitive. Advertising on the television and radio, or posting a billboard alongside a highway just isn’t enough anymore. Four out of five homes in the United States is online in some form, whether it’s by computer, phone, or tablet, and on average, people spend more time online than they do watching television. That means a good percentage of your customer base will probably come from online shoppers. It’s easy and convenient for them, and they only have to deal with somebody when it comes to it. But having a website for your business isn’t all you need.
Just having a website isn’t enough. You cannot simply put basic content and post it up online, then expect to get customers. You need to decide what kind of content to put on your site, and where to put it. If you fill your website full of ads and nonsense, a potential customer is going to close out of it and go somewhere else. The first page, or the “Home Page”, is the first impression, and most important page of the site. If you make it attractive and easy on the eye, with good content, chances are you will in the least keep the customer interested, and may even make a sale.
Think of website as an office, and the content as yourself. Then, think of how you would want people to perceive you. Are you tacky and unorganized, as well as a rambling fool? Or are you a confident professional who is well organized and straight to the point? Your website, essentially, is a projection of yourself and your business. If a person doesn’t take your website seriously, then you might as well pack up and go home.
You can have the most beautiful website out there, but if you lack good content and good SEO (Search Engine Optimization) work, then your site isn’t going to rank. If it doesn’t rank, then nobody is going to see it unless they are searching specifically for your site. If the SEO work is done properly, you should be able to rank within the top ten spots of a search engine without much trouble. Of course, unless you know how to do SEO, your best option is to hire somebody for the task. But don’t pick somebody just because they say they know what they are doing. Ask for a portfolio, as well as how long they have been doing it.
SEO is probably the most important part of a website. A person could search for one thing, but if the keyword they type in matches a keyword in your website’s description, most likely your site will appear in their search results. If it happens to be something they are interested in, then you have a chance to gain a potential customer.
So remember, if you want to stay afloat in today’s competitive market, you need to have a website for your business. Not only does it get your name out there, it also makes it more convenient for people. And in today’s society, convenience is the key. Sure, it might cost you a bit in the beginning, but if it’s done right, you should make your money back rather quickly. Who knows, you could take a small personal business and turn it in to something big and live your dreams.
