Backing up Your Data, Why it’s Important

| Marc Enzor |

Why is Backing up Data Important?

There aren’t a very high percentage of people, considering how many there are using computers in general, that think to back up their data. “Nothing’s going to happen to me.” They might say, and then, just like out of a comic, their hard drive up and dies, and all that work and important information is gone! It’s more often than not that these sorts of things happen, and that’s why you need to be prepared for when that time does come. One can’t afford not to be, especially in these days when computers are essential to our everyday lives and the circulation of the almighty dollar. Luckily, data backup isn’t as complicated as it might sound to be, and thanks to technology, you have a few options to choose from.

What Options Are There?

Luckily, with today’s technology, we are no longer constricted to just one single option for backing up data. Back when computers first came out, the only option you had was a floppy disk, which was time consuming, and often involved more than one floppy disk. But today, a person can choose from a CD, which can store more than one gigabyte (1GB) of data. Then, with even more available space, you have a flash drive, also known as a jump drive or thumb drive, which can hold more than sixteen gigabytes (16GB) of data. Also, you can use what is known as an SD Card, or memory card, just like the kind you might use for that digital camera of yours, which can hold up to sixty-four gigabytes (64GB). There’s also your external hard drives, which hold up to a terabyte (1TB). But if you are the kind of person that doesn’t want to have to worry about losing any of those items, then backing up data online is the way to go. There is virtually unlimited space, and your data is just a few keystrokes and mouse clicks away.

Which Files Should I Backup?

Sometimes, people do not backup their data because they do not know which files are important to keep, or that backing up data is even an option. There are times when you need to do a full hard drive backup, which is good for those times when a hard drive quits or gets fried. But most times, that’s just not practical. The most important files that need to be backed up are the registry files and the “Mirror Image”. These are basically the heart and soul of your OS. Others may include applications that you run often, or any file or folder that you store data in, such as your Documents folder, or Photos. Basically, anything that you deem important in your life is worth backing up.

Backing Up Data: A Necessary Convenience

With computers becoming more frequently used throughout the world, from use at home, to school, and to various careers including corporate, military, and space exploration, backing up data is essential. In the past few years, backing up data online has become an increasingly growing trend. It’s quick and easy, and you don’t have to worry about losing any kind of device. Perhaps one day scientists will find a way to enhance our brains to function more like a conventional computer, but until then, backing up data is always going to be necessary.
